State Governor Hamsaraj Bharadwaj has returned the file forwarded to

him by the state government with a proposal to release as many as 593 prisons who are

undergoing life imprisonment.

Governor seeks report on under trials

State Governor Hamsaraj Bharadwaj who has expressed his

displeasure over the state government proposal to release 593 prisoners undergoing life

imprisonment in various jails in the state, has sought a comprehensive report from the

DGP on every under trial whose name finds a mention in the list. The Governor’s order

has only made the Department of Prisons stand on its toes.

Transparency International (Karnataka Chapter) President and former

High Court judge Justice MF Saldanha who has objected to the state government’s

moves to release 594 prisoners lodged in various jails, even before they completed their

sentences, has written a letter to State Governor seeking a probe into the case. Justice

Saldanha in his letter has also suspected some foul play behind this.
