Higher compensation demanded to SEZ displaced farmers

MANGALORE : Farmer leaders have urged the district administration to ban

Endosulfan and to provide more compensation to farmers who lost lands to the MSEZ.

Speaking at a meeting of farmers and representatives of farmers? organization convened

by the Deputy Commissioner on April 21, Thursday, they demanded that the price

of areca be fixed scientifically. Another demand was to increase the compensation to

farmers who have suffered crop loss. The farmers also requested the DC against banks

using forcible measures for loan recovery.

On this occasion, the DC informed that the district administration has decided to convene

a meeting of farmers once in two months to hear their grievances. He also directed taluk

level officials to convene similar meetings every month.

The DC has assured the farmers to consider their demands like loan waiver and steps to

prevent forcible loan recovery from farmers and also against publishing the photographs

of the defaulters in newspapers.
