MANGALORE: An under trial lodged in the city sub-jail was attacked by another under trial, prior to the release of the former on bail on Wednesday. The under trail who was subject to attack has been identified as Asif (19), a resident of Bajpe Sunkadakatte while the accused is Priyas Bhandari, an activist of a Hindu organization.
It is learnt Asif who was arrested on the charges of attempting assault on a Bhajrangdal activist at Sunkadakatte was released on bail Wednesday, prior to which he was attacked by Bhandari, also said to be a Bhajrangdal activist. Even the jail authorities have confirmed that Asif was attacked.
According to Asif, Priyas Bhandari told him so prior to his release -“We intended to finish you here itself. But you have been saved as you are going out.” Bhandari also reportedly threatened to kill Asif.
When this correspondent contacted the Jail Superintendent Shesha he said “Such incidents are common in the jail, a minor incident has taken place and everything is set right.”
It may be recalled here that several cases of attacks on under trials had been reported in the prison when the now suspended Eshwar Nayak was the superintendent. Sheshamurthi who took charge after Nayak whowever had com commendation by bringing about several reforms, in the jail. Presently following the transfer of Sheshamurthi, one Shesha is the jail superintendent since the past couple of weeks.
“I have not attacked Bhajrangdal activist”
Asif who is now on bail has said that he had not attempted any assault on Lakshmana Poojari, a driver in MRPL. He has also charged the police of fixing him in a false case and has challenged those who complained against him to swear in the Kateel and Dharmasthala temples.
