PADUBIDRI : Confusion prevailed near the entrance gate of the UPCL plant on
February 28 Monday when the Congress leaders who took out a padayatra against the
project, were denied entry into the project site by the company authorities.
It may be recalled here that the Congress took out a padayatra after the Raitha Sangha
and then the JD(S) embarked on a padayatra against the company.
Over 350 Congress workers had participated in the party sponsored padayatra from
Mudarangady upto the project site. The workers even visited the fly ash pond and later
sought permission to enter the project site. Though a few company officials arrived to
hold talks with the agitators, they only had to face the fury of the agitators forcing them
to flee with police protection.
Addressing the agitators, Vasanth Salian, former minister said the people of the region,
were finding it extremely difficult to lead a normal life though the company was now
generating just 100 mw of electricity.
The agitators also expressed their anguish over the statement made by the company
authorities clarifying that the company has done no harm to the locality and environment.
They were also agitated over the tahsildar who had reportedly issued a statement in
favour of the company. Later, the tahsildar Prasanna Kumar clarified that he had referred
to some locals when he said that the company has done no harm..
