MANGALORE: The incessant rains lashing Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts since the past two days have thrown normal life out of gear. Over 10 houses have collapsed, several injured and property worth several lakhs of rupees damaged.
A house near Shaktinagar cross in the city was partially damaged after a hill caved in nearby. An occupant of the house Narayan Gowda has been injured and has been hospitalized. In Ullal, Seetha (65), wife of Kantappa Poojari of Madoor has been reported missing and is suspected to have been washed away by the rain waters after she left home for the fields.
Water logging has been reported from several parts of the city including Urvastores, Matadakani, Kodialguttu, Jeppinamogaru, Ullalpatna, Kallaup, Amblamogaru and other places. Rain water has also gushed into houses in these areas.
In Ullal , Tokkottu, Kuttar, Someshwar, Kotekar, Talapady and other areas the heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have blew away the name boards of several shops, cut outs and has also uprooted several trees. Even the Mangalore-Bangalore train has been cancelled on Friday owing to the heavy rains.
School bldg collapses: In Manipur Government Primary School near Katapady, three students sustained serious injuries when the school building was damaged after a huge tree fell over the building on July 29, Thursday. Several children were panic stricken following the incident and as many as 22 students were shifted to the Udupi Government Hospital as a precautionary measure. School headmistress Niveditha has clarified that except three students none were hurt in the incident.
In Sajipanadu, the local ZP School building was also damaged after a tree fell over it on the night of July 28, Wednesday. It is learnt, the building was already dilapidated.
The heavy winds also dislodged the roof tiles of the Bada Ermal Junior College. Several goods including sports equipment and Akshara Dasoha rice stored inside the building were damaged due to the seepage of rain water inside the building.
