MANGALORE: As the Kerala MPs are mounting pressure on the authorities to have
a new railway division at Tiruvananthapuram, the various organizations of coastal
Karnataka have decided to urge the state MPs to prevail upon the government to merge
Mangalore with the Mysore railway division.
The Railway Yatri Sanghas here have said that Kerala MPs have already submitted
a proposal to the Railway Board to include the Madagaon to Hassan railway line
on the Mangalore Konkan Railway line within the new division to come up at
Tiruvananthapuram.
It has also been learnt that the Kerala MPs were even continuing efforts to have a
divisional head office in Mangalore having jurisdiction in Madagaon and Hassan railway
limits.
The railway limits from Tokur upto Madagaon are under the Konkan Railway
Corporation. On the other hand Hassan, which is a part of Mysore division is under
South West Railway, the headquarters of which is in Hubli. Mangalore meanwhile is in
Southern Railway’s Palakkad division.
The demand of the organizations here is that the MPs of Karnataka should see to it
that Mangalore does not come under Tiruvananthapuram division. They also fear that
Mangalore would be inconvenienced in case the demand of the Kerala MPs was heeded
to.
Anil Hegde, Convener of Paschima Karavali Railway Yatri Sangha has demanded that
the MPs of Karnataka should unitedly fight to include Mangalore in Mysore division.
Even RL Dias, President of the Udupi Railway Yatri Sangha has felt that the Konkan
Railway Corporation which has registered good progress should not be brought under
Indian Railways, instead it should be further encouraged. He also said that the railway
stations maintained by Konkan Railway were far better than the stations managed by the
Indian Railways.
