MANGALORE: Mangalore Legislator UT Khader has urged the state government to form a Special Agriculture Zone in Mangalore on the lines of the Special Economic Zone which, he said was being implemented in Dakshina Kannada district by forcibly acquiring thousand of acres of agricultural lands.
Raising his voice over the pressing problems confronting the district, in the Assembly session held on Saturday, Khader also demanded uninterrupted supply of power to rural areas and implementation of a separate farm loan policy, when legislators cutting across party lines joined him to urge the government to consider the demands.
Referring to the problems faced by areca growers in the coastal and Malnad region, Khader urged the government to issue order against recovery of farm loans in the backdrop of the problems confronting the farming community owing to deluge in some places and drought in some others.
Yet another demand placed before the government by Khader was to set up purchase and sales outlets at a distance of every 10 kms by the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee with a view to secure better prices for farm produces. He also demanded that the government protect the interests of the farming community by implementing personal crop insurance scheme.
