Winds of political change in state

In a democracy, politics is never a stagnant water. The social dynamics of the day determines the political turn of events. Now, a year after the BJP formed its own government in the state, opposition parties Congress and the JD(S) have begun reviewing and introspecting their past follies. As of now there are indications of these two parties joining hands to overthrow the BJP government which is pursuing a communal agenda in the state. This has already given sleepless nights to Yaddyurappa and his charmed team.
State JD(S) leader and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy has already met Congress President Sonia Gandhi last week. This however did not make news as the visit had remained a closely guarded secret. However, an English daily from Delhi had published a corner report in this regard. This visit by Kumaraswamy was the second visit in the recent times, the first one being his meeting with Sonia with an intent of becoming a union minister when there emerged a clear picture that Manmohan Singh led government would once again be taking charge at the Centre. During Kumaraswamy’s recent meeting with Sonia, apart from the political scenario of the nation, even the current political scenario of the state naturally came up for discussion.
The JD(S) and the Congress which contested separately in the previous parliamentary polls as well as two rounds of assembly polls and have felt the heat, have also realized that their remaining apart would only help the BJP to strengthen itself. In this backdrop, both these parties are holding high level talks on mutual adjustments.
Already, Congress leader Siddaramaiah has hinted at the possibility of a Congress-JD(S) tie-up in the elections to the Bangalore corporation which is a prestige issue for all political parties. Though this development is not coincidental to Kumaraswamy’s meeting with Sonia and Congress High Command leaders, it can very well be construed as an indication of the heralding of a new era of cooperation between the Congress and the JD(S).
It’s true that the recent developments in the BJP at the national level, has cast apprehensions among the party legislators on the stability of their party. At least 30 per cent of the legislators of this party do not come from hardcore RSS background. It is not impossible that at least 10 dissidents from this category may come out of the party to form their own coterie and back a probable Congress-JD(S) government.
Meanwhile, in another development, state Governor Bharadwaj has already expressed his concern over the law and order scenario in the state. The governor’s remarks on the law and order situation-keeping in view the continuing attacks masterminded by the Parivar outfits on minorities and those opposing saffronisation, particularly considering the explosive situation in the coastal belt, has only encouraged the opposition parties to challenge the government. That both the JD(S) and the Congress have expressed consensus with the governor’s remarks is only an indication of the two parties coming closer. This development will not end here. Not just the governor, the entire state is disillusioned with the manner in which Yaddyurappa is handling the law and order scenario in the state. Yaddyurappa is only leaving everything to the discretion of Acharya who lacks dynamism. This will ultimately prove too costly to the CM itself. If the governor has expressed his apprehensions over the law and order scenario, it has something to do directly with Acharya’s ministry. If the chief minister had at least thought of replacing Acharya by an able leader at least for that reason, then it would have sent positive signals to the governor and the people of the state. What is now being heard is that Yaddyurappa by remaining indifferent, is only staking the interests of the government. Whatever it may be, the present developments have made people expect radical changes in the state’s political scenario in the days to come. The BJP government which came to power for the very first time, as if it was an accident, is not likely to last long. For the rest, let us wait and watch on our screens as to what will happen in the near future !
