HONAVAR: Miscreants have stoned the Holy Cross Church located near the Town Police Station here on Tuesday night. The incident came to light on Wednesday morning.

The glass showcase having the statues of St Joseph and St Mary have been damaged in the stoning. Ronald D’Souza, Treasurer of the Holy Cross Betterment Committee has lodged a complaint with the Honavar police.

The Holy Cross Church is one of the ancient churches in the town and had been renovated ten years ago. The church is visited by not only Christians but also by people of other faiths. Interestingly the church is located very close by the local town police station and the attack has instilled some sort of fear in the minds of the minority community.

There is the possibility of the miscreants deciding to stone the church fearlessly as they were well aware that the cops would be on election duty that night. Seven stones were found near the glass case carrying the statues.

Security has been stepped up in the area to prevent any untoward incident. Police have also spread a dragnet to nab the accused.
