NEW DELHI : The Editors’ Guild of India has warned the Karnataka Police against targeting the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act to harass journalists for no reason.

It may be recalled here that the police had warned the Prajavani correspondent Rahul Belagali who had interviewed a Maoist leader, of legal action if he did not provide information regarding the Maoist to them.

“ It is nothing but highhandedness on the part of the policemen to threaten a journalist in this manner to secure confidential information. There is no scope for this in a democracy,” Rajdeep Sardesai, President of Editors’ Guild of India and Koomi Kapoor, its General Secretary, have warned.

“ Media cannot make public the source of their news. It is the duty of the media to present before the public factual reports. Therefore, the police cannot ask the media to make public their source of news,” they clarified.
