Old building of MCC lays abandoned

Mangaluru: A nearly one and a half century old building in Bunder area which once housed the erstwhile Mangaluru Municipality today stands dilapidated and is also facing fears of encroachment. This 152 year old building lies unused ever since the MCC office was shifted to the present building at Lalbagh in 1986.
This spacious but dilapidated structure whic is presently lying abandoned is being used by some local traders to stock their goods. Even the wooden furniture and other things in this building have been stolen.
There is also a suggestion to renovate this structure and use it as a shelter place for the homeless. Thoug h DYFI leaders point out that they have tried several times to draw the attention of the goverment towards this issue it has been a futile exercise.
Given the present situation, it may be no surprise if the building is completely encroached in the days to come if the MCC fails to act on time.
Meanwhile, Mayor Kavitha Sanil has assured to look into the matter. She has also said she would inspect the building and then hold talks with the officials.
