Heated debate in MCC over contamination of Netravathi water

The BJP corporators placed forth a strong demand to set up a Sewage Treatment Plant, which they said would go a long way in checking the release of effluents into the river.
The BJP corporators said that tests have revealed that the water supplied to Mangaluru residents is contaminated and that poultry wastes were also dumped into the river in some places. Members demanded that a water filtration unit too should be set up in Bantwal which is also the home constituency of Minister Ramanatha Rai.
Responding to the several complaints of the BJP corporators, Mayor Harinath said the Corporation was supplying clean drinking water to Mangaluru and that there was no need for panic. ” Had people consumed contaminated water, then they would have been suffering from several diseases by now” he said.
It was later decided at the meeting that all corporators would visit Thumbay to have firsthand information about the problem.
