It took 35 years for a post-matric hostel to come up

Mangaluru : When State Minister for Social Welfare Anjaneya inaugurated the post-matric hostel for girls near Urwa Marigudi in Mangaluru recently not many were aware that it took almost 35 years for this hostel to be a reality.
The MCC had provided aid for this hostel for SC /ST students way back in 1980-81. The MCC and Social Welfare Department had entrusted the construction of the building to the PWD. With funds from the 18 per cent reserve fund the construction was almost completed in 1990. But the final instalment of funds came seven years later.
The building had become dilapidated by then and the then DC hesitated to allow the inauguration of the hostel. Meanwhile, there were complaints of fund misuse. In subsequent developments, MCC asked the PWD to return the Rs 32.83 crore sent for the purpose. But the PWD refused and said the poor quality of construction was due to the failure of the MCC to release funds on time. Complaints to Lokayukta proved futile and in 2005 MCC Commissioner wrote to the then ZP CEO Subodh Yadav to take possession of the building. In 2008 the then DC Maheshwar Rao ordered demolition of the building. Now the new building has come up at a cost of Rs 3.96 crores after almost 35 years.
