65% posts vacant in Mangaluru RTO office

Mangaluru : The coastal city of Mangaluru boasts itself as the fastest growing city next only to the capital Bengaluru. The city is witnessing progress on various fronts. As the city progresses, the number of vehicles on the roads are also seeing a steady rise. But ironically, the city is having an in-charge Regional Transport Officer since the past one year ever since the earlier incumbent AA Khan retired from service.
Assistant Regional Transport Officer G S Hegde has been serving as the in-Chief Regional Transport Officer since the past one year.
To add to the problem, nearly 65% posts in the Regional Transport Office in Mangaluru are lying vacant. If a total of 97 posts are to be filled so far only 36 posts have been filled.
The absence of adequate staff has severely hampered the effective functioning of the Office, says Hegde and adds the office has to cater to vehicle registration, issuing of driving licence, renewal of licence, distribution of smart cards and various other works which the existing staff find it difficult to handle.
