Suspicious death of prisoner in lock-up of Manipal police station

Udupi: A man of Uttar Pradesh origin who was arrested on charges of abetting the suicide of his wife, has died under suspicious circumstances in the lock-up of Manipal police station.
The deceased is Gaya Prasad of Bhavani Dereband district in Uttar Pradesh. He was arrested following a complaint lodged by his wife Roshni’s (18) brother Ram Prasad Nisar Bava alleging that he (Gaya Prasad) forced her to take the extreme step. Roshni had ended her life by hanging herself at their rented house on August 3 after locking herself up inside the house. Gayaprasad worked in the scrap shop of his landlord Aboobakker in Parkala town. It is learnt he was addicted to alcohol.
Gayaprasad who was arrested on August 5, Wednesday night was placed in the lock-up where he had reportedly asked for a blanket from constables Krishna Prasad and Mahesh at around 11.30 pm saying he was feeling cold. However by 11.45 pm, he was found hanging using the bed sheet through the ventilator. Though he was rushed to KMC Hospital, Manipal, doctors pronounced him dead.
The post-mortem was conducted at KMC Hospital on August 6, Thursday, Western Rang IGP Amrit Pal who visited the hospital said “there was no fault of the police who had given him a bed sheet as he had said that he was feeling cold.” The post-mortem report is yet to be out.
