
VITTAL : Huge quantity of gas leakage from the Konkan Gas Refilling unit at Mittur, which brought anxious moments for the citizens, was checked due to the timely and successful operation of the fire service squad, thereby averting a major mishap.
The incident took place at the private gas refilling unit of Puttur Petrochemicals at around 5 pm on Thursday. The refilling unit has three huge capsule model gas storage tanks of 40 tonne capacity each . From here the gas is transported to the refilling spot which was a little away at the same area, through pipes having safety barriers. But on Thursday evening, there was some amount of gas leakage from the gas pipe of one of the tanks. When the pressure increased, thee was more gas leakage resulting in gas spreading in the atmosphere in three kms in the vicinity creating panic among locals
The fire service personnel who swung into action immediately, pressed all staff into service and shifted the gas from the leaking tank to another empty tank, in order to reduce the pressure on the latter. Even the MESCOM as a precautionary measure had snapped electricity connection in Puttur, Kumbra, Vittal and Salettur areas. Police had cautioned public through announcements. In some places, villagers had to be shifted to prevent any casualty. Even senior officials and police authorities arrived at the spot and monitored the steps being taken, thereby helping in the timely check of the gas leakage, making the locals heave a sigh of relief when everything was normalized by midnight. Even a team of experts from MRPL were summoned to the spot to bring the gas leakage under control.
