BELTHANGADY : Forest officials as well as local villagers have rescued a leopard which was in danger after it fell into a bait laid for boars in the fencing of a plantation at Taramadu Kundadka in Machina village on September 26, Friday. This is the third leopard which has fallen into the bait laid for a boar in the village.
It is suspected that the leopard had fallen into the trap while it had come in search of food during night time. A local resident noticed the leopard trying to get out of the trap which was tight around its waist leaving the big cat in complete distress.
As news spread around, several people gathered and even the Forest Officials were informed. The leopard on seeing the crowd began to roar in anger. Finally, a cage was brought from Vamadapadav in Bantwal while Pilikula veterinarians Vikram and Dinesh administered tranquilisers to the leopard. It was later treated by Dr Vibha. It is said the nearly ten year old leopard weighed around 40 kg.
Forest officials have informed that the leopard would be released to forest after it recovers.
Villagers say the wild animal had preyed upon several goats and dogs in the village.
