MANGALORE : The SEZ authorities have forcibly acquired the 4.03 acres of land at Permude Kudubipadavu, with police protection on Sunday, despite a High Court stay against the acquisition of this land notified for SEZ.
The High Court had issued the stay after locals namely Giriya Gowda, Lingappa Gowda, Krishna Gowda and Vittappa Gowda had moved the court requesting a stay to land acquisition fearing that the SEZ authorities may bull doze their land as done in case of the lands of the other tribals last year, as the land transfer notice (28/6) period had expired on January 22 itself. The court had also stayed the notice 28/.6 and also the acquisition.
Yesterday being a Sunday, the SEZ authorities taking advantage of the absence of petitioners in their houses, arrived at the place along with SI Pramod Kumar and SEZ officer Raghavendra Holla, removed the fencing put up by the Kudubis and laid a road.
It is also learnt that the SEZ goondas and officer Holla tried to attack the women who objected to this forcible acquisition.
Already the Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samithi has complained to the DC, SP and Western Range IGP in this regard.
However when The Canara Times contacted SP Dr Subrahmanyeshwara Rao he said “The police department provided security only because the district administration sought so ; the department has nothing to do with land acquisition. We learnt of the HC stay just yesterday evening. If the police had provided protection despite having a copy of the High Court stay, then it would have been wrong. But the police are not be blamed here. We only acted at the behest of the district administration.”
However, Ravichandra Nayak, Tahsildar of Mangalore had this to say “ We knew that the Dix Engineering had an injunction order and not the Karnataka Government, KIADB and SEZ. As there were complaints that the people had fenced their land without securing compensation, the fencing has been removed. The farmers have also not produced the copy of the court stay despite asking to do so.”
