SULLIA : The famous Matysatheertha Lake at Todikana near here is today crying for attention with hundreds of fish in this lake perishing for want of water every year. What has been noticed is that the lake was drying up every year affecting the fish. The lake is a home to thousands of fish including several large fish of rare breed. There is also a strong belief among locals that any skin disease would be cured if rice is offered to the fish in the lake as a harake.
The efforts by the local administration in filling this lake by letting water into it through a pipe from a place called Devaragundi were also highly insuffice. In 1999, the ZP and the Fisheries Department through a joint aid of Rs 4 crore had constructed a vented dam across this lake while a protective wall was also raised by the fisheries department in the year 2007-2008. Still none of these actions had succeeded in conserving the fish in the lake.
The locals have therefore made an ardent appeal to the authorities to think in terms of finding a permanent solution to the problem to conserve this lake.
