MANGALORE : Tension prevailed in Ullal for some time on Friday when CPM and DYFI activists gheraoed the Ullal Circle Inspector Lingappa for arresting a senior leader of CPM and a DYFI activist on the charges that they had knowledge of the attack on two Rama sene activists in the area the previous day. The arrested Sanjeeva Pilar of CPM and Sandesh of DYFI have been produced before the court and demanded to 15 days of judicial custody.
It has already been reported that two Rama Sene activists namely Lokesh and Sanjay who had earlier trapped a Hindu girl anda Muslim youth in Ullal police station limits and later handed over the pair to the police, were attacked by some Muslim youth reportedly at the behest of the family of the girl, who had summoned the two Rama Sene men to their house for talks.
The Ullal police who have charged Pilar and Sandesh of conspiring behind the attack have arrested them and have registered murder attempt cases on them.
This was strongly objected by CPM and DYFI activists who demanded that Pilar be produced before them. Succumbing to pressure, the police produced Pilar before the agitators, when he said he had no role to play in the attack but was arrested for the sole reason that he did not inform the police despite having knowledge about the attack.
This has agitated the CPM activists who demanded that action be initiated even against inspector Lingappa who they said had not informed the higher ups of the defamatory speech made by VHP leader Jagadish Shenava before the Konaje police station and had also failed to arrest Shenava despite a criminal case lodged against him.
The CPM workers have also alleged that the police had succumbed to pressure from the Sangh Parivar and BJP leaders to initiate action against innocent activists of the Left.
DYFI District President Muneer Katipalla has described the arrest of the CPM and DYFI activist as a systematic conspiracy and an act of political vengeance. The DYFI has also warned of severe protest against the arrests.
Meanwhile, allegations are also heard that the SI AD Nagaraj had behaved rudely with senior CPM leader Krishnappa Salian who had been to the station following the incident. According to DYFI activists the SI had threatened “to break Krishnappa Salian’s backbone if he intervened in police cases.”
