BELTHANGADY : Nearly 15 families in Basavanagudi and Kundaguri Dalit colonies in Kaniyoor Gram Panchayat limits have a strong fear that they may be deprived of electricity facility under the hamlet scheme, despite their colonies selected as beneficiaries under the scheme.

According to reports, efforts were presently on to provide electricity facility to houses of non-Dalit families under the hamlet scheme, by dropping the names of the needy beneficiaries. Here, it may be recalled that residents of the Dalit colony of Basavanagudi have been demanding electricity connection since long. It is learnt, as per the rules, a budget estimate has also been prepared to provide electricity to 10 houses in Basavanagudi SC colony and to the houses of a few non-Dalit families.

The residents of the colonies have also been placing forth their demand at every meeting and during the tenure of the erstwhile GP administration, the funds earmarked for their colony was even shifted to Uruvalu village of the then GP chief.

As per the MESCOM records, 13 families including 10 SC families and three Billawa families of Kaniyoor-Basavanagudi SC colony are beneficiaries of this project.

But, reports say the contractor concerned by dropping the name of the Dalit families was planning to provide electricity connection to some other houses at the behest of a local lady leader of the BJP.

It is reported that the actual beneficiaries had even been to the residence of the BJP leader who then told them that the scheme has not been sanctioned to their colony but to some other place.

Presently, the several Dalit families are under the fear that their houses may be deprived of electricity connection even this time.
