MANGALORE : Pattabhirama Somayaji, Lecturer in University College, Mangalore, has cautioned the public against the ploy of the Sangh Parivar to disturb peace and tranquility by sowing the seeds of hatred between Christians Muslims and Hindus.
He was addressing a huge protest organised by the district committee of the Social Democratic Party of India in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in the city on Friday demanding action against those named as accused by the Liberhan Commission, that probed into the Babri Masjid Demolition case.
Somayaji also regretted the fact that excluding the Left parties no other political party had strongly condemned the atrocities committed on women and children during the Ayodhya related riots as well as the violence which Ullal and Suratkal witnessed in the later years.
Thinker G Rajashekhar, who also addressed the gathering said “The main reason for the opposition to the demolition of Babri masjid is that it was not just the demolition of a building but it was an incident that also led to the loss of several innocent lives.” Stating that shops and houses belonging to the minority community were ransacked and the innocents subject to atrocities after the demolition, he said the demolition of Babri Masjid has to be opposed on humanitarian grounds.
Maulana Usman Baig, Chairman of All India Imams’ Council, in his address said Muslims, Dalits and the backward communities had been kept out of the legislative, executive and judicial systems in the 60 years after independence. Alleging that the demolition of the Sangh Parivar was a pre-planned act, he accused the Congress of also colluding with the BJP in this act. ” The Congress which was in power then could have prevented the demolition had it wished,” he said and emphasized the need to launch a movement to secure justice to the Dalit, weaker and the exploited sections.
Abdul Majeed, State President of SDPI, presided over the meet.
