MANGALORE: With reports coming in that the Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh was likely to be transferred very soon, it has to be mentioned here that the law and order scenario in the district saw a complete breakdown during the tenure of Seemanth. The crime graph in the Commissionerate limits has soared and murders, looting, attacks etc etc have become the order of the day.

Seemanth who had served as SP of the district in 2002-2003 had taken charge as the first Commissioner of Mangalore on May 30, 2010. The entire Commissionerate was given a modern look and was equipped with modern gadgets. However, none of these facilities helped in improving the style of functioning of the Commissionerate. Absence of will power, acting puppet at the hands of the ruling party and weakening of the intelligence wing seem to be the major achievements of Singh during his tenure.

It was just around the time when Seemanth took charge that the driver of a quarry owner at Haleyangady was killed. Candle Santhu was named the accused in the case. In yet another case, notorious rowdy Kabeer was hacked to death by assailants near Gurupur Bandasale. In later developments, bullets landed on a builder’s car in Kadri and there was even shoot out in a shipping company at Kulur.

Goverdhan, a taxi driver from Bejai was kidnapped and killed. Last year, there was a double murder of a mother and daughter at Panjimogaru. The accused are not yet traced and the case is under CID probe.

In another case, police informer and rowdy Sandeep Shetty was killed by his one time friends at his wife’s house. This was followed by the murder of rowdy Murugesh and his brother-in-law at Moodushedde. In Kaikamba, an attempt was made on the life of autorickshaw driver Ravi. Before these murders could fade from public memory, two youth namely Manikantha and Hemantha were killed within a span of just 12 hours in what was an aftermath of a gang war in Suratkal.

The killers of Kanchan Textiles Manager Dinesh Raj are still at large even though the murder took place right inside the shop in a busy area. There was even an attempt on the life of Beary Academy Chief Rahim Uchil. One John involved in a money doubling racket was murdered in Suratkal, rowdy Guruprasad was killed on Bibi Alabi Road and recently there was another murder of a youth at Akashbhavan.

If the accused in some of the above mentioned cases have been arrested, investigations have not made headway in many other cases. That’s not all, many more incidents of crime including cases of rape of minors, domestic violence , chain snatching cases and not to forget cases of moral policing too were reported.
