SURATKAL : Villagers of Chelyaru staged a protest on June 12, Tuesday demanding the immediate repair of the roads in the Chelyaru gram panchayat limits, which are in dire straits due to the SEZ effluent releasing pipeline project. Villagers have complained that a 2 km stretch of road in Madhya village of Chelyaru is virtually unmotorable and proved dangerous.

Eshwar Kateel , Zilla Panchayat Member, even took the SEZ engineer Padmanabha who arrived at the spot, to task and warned that the pipeline would be removed unless the road was repaired at the earliest.

The villagers alleged that buses have stopped plying on the road landing children and office goers in trouble. A memorandum was submitted to the SEZ authorities on the occasion. The protest was withdrawn after SEZ officials assured to repair the road and also construct side drains.

TP member Vajrakshi Shetty, Chelyaru GP chief Pushparaj Shetty, Vice President Pushpa and others took part in the protest.
