SHRC Chief urged to direct government to close UPCL plant

UDUPI : State Human Rights Commission Justice SR Nayak accepted complaints from public at the Udupi District Administration Complex Rajathadri on June 11, Monday. A total of six cases pertaining to human rights violation were filed before the Commission on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Bharath Kumar, fishermen leader of Ermal Bada complained that the UPCL has so far not taken any step to provide compensation to the 302 poor fishermen who were deprived of their livelihood due to non availability of fish catch due to the UPCL waste water pipeline in the sea. He pointed out that despite an Udupi DC order to provide them compensation two years ago, nothing had come forth so far.

Shashidhar Shetty Admar, former president of Ellur GP also drew the attention of the SHRC chief towards the several problems confronting the locals due to the UPCL plant and alleged that the district administration has so far failed to respond to their problems. He also requested the SHRC chief to direct the government to issue an order for the closure of the UPCL plant.
