KARKALA : A bridge at Kukkundadi in Nooralbettu of Edu village in Karkala taluk, which has been identified as a Naxal affected area, is in a state of utter disrepair much to the concern of the local villagers. Large potholes have appeared on this bridge and a portion of it has also collapsed some time back after a sand lorry overturned here.

The residents of the village fear they may be cut off from the rest of the world if this bridge collapses during monsoons. The KIOCL had spent Rs 3 lakhs on this bridge which has been a boon to the people of the area, majority of whom are tribals.

Locals say the movement of heavily loaded vehicles has led to the present state of the bridge. It has been reported that even the supportive pillars of this bridge are in a sorry state.

Villagers recall that the bridge had developed cracks during the last monsoons. Though they had immediately informed the authorities to repair the bridge, it had been of no avail.

In fact, the villagers have tried their level best to keep this bridge in as good condition as possible, on their own by taking some initiative to repair it. But, this monsoons, they fear the bridge may get washed away in the rains.

Here it is worth mentioning that even the ANF which is involved in combing operations in the area has been using this bridge and is now inconvenienced due to its sorry state. The villagers are hoping that the authorities would ensure steps to repair this bridge before the onset of monsoons.
