SEZ is engulfing the coastal district

When a White Elephant called the Mangalore Special Economic Zone was initiated a few years ago, a rosy picture was presented-that it would be a great boon to the coastal district and would shower employment opportunities on the local youth.

But it took a few years for the local people to realize the true picture. Today, it is becoming clear bit by bit that SEZ is nothing but a demon that was killing our lives inch by inch.

The SEZ projects have not only affected the sensitive ecology of the region, but were also engulfing the basic infrastructure. Vast tracts of farm lands too have been acquired for the projects. Though the lay man does not want SEZ, it is wanted by the government, ruling class and corporate sector.

There is every reason behind it -SEZ involves huge investment, kickbacks and also advertisements. The administration is committed to ensure all facilities to the SEZ even if it meant to bull doze the lives of the people.

Though an Anti-SEZ campaign is underway here since the past several years, the government is bothered least about the same. Our Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda can be a good example to explain how leaders change stance no sooner they get power. If Gowda was a staunch opposer of UPCL when he was an MP, he is now defending the same.

If the people have been resisting the MSEZ pipeline and corridor road project since the past several days, the government’s response to the same is disappointing. The CM has failed to respond to the aspirations of the people in this case.

If the CM cannot prevent the atrocities on the common man by the SEZ which has even kept the DC under its clutches, and if he (CM) cannot keep up his words, what else can the common man do but take to the streets ?
