SULLIA : The Union Government has given its go ahead to the controversial Gundya hydel project and the construction of a dam at Athirapilli in Kerala. By doing so, the Centre has rejected the recommendations of a high level committee regarding the two projects.

It may be recalled here that a committee of experts led by Madhav Gadgil, former professor of the Indian Institute of Science of Bangalore, had recommended to the government to drop the 200 mw hydel plant at Gundya and the 23 meter tall and 311 meter long dam at Athirapilli which can support the generation of 163 mw of hydel power.

The Union Environment Ministry, it is learnt, turned down the recommendations stating that the Gadgil led committee had prepared the report based on public opinion.
