Mangalore : Vidya Dinker of Citizens’ Forum for Development of Mangalore and four other social activists who were arrested following a false complaint lodged by the Deputy Commissioner who stood in favour of the SEZ which has encroached the Phalguni river banks at Kulur, have been remanded to 15 days of judicial custody.
It has been alleged that the DC has misused power by curtailing the rights of the people to protest in a democracy. In fact, Vidya along with Latha D’Souza, Jecintha, Godfrey and Ashok Amin had been to the DC office to take the officer to task for not visiting Atrebail-Melkoppala as promised by him and for permitting SEZ to go ahead with its works.
It is learnt, the DC who failed to discuss the issue had walked out agitating the social activists who followed the DC and asked him to react on the issue. Following this, the DC had summoned the Pandeshwar police and had lodged a complaint stating that ‘they had come in the way of his duties.”Accordingly, the social activists have been arrested on non-bailable charges.
Meanwhile, an allegation has been heard is that the police had even violated the law by not allowing the activists meet even their advocates for hours together.
It may be recalled here that the previous day, the Pandeshwar police had even tried to manhandle the activists by holding some of them by their collars.
