MANGALOR: The election to the DK District unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat slated to be held on April 29, Sunday, has aroused much curiosity. There is a triangular contest this time, with erstwhile president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, M Sarvottam Anchan and Harish Bantwal in the fray.
Kalkura had served as the Parishat President for three terms. If he was elected unopposed for the first two terms, he won against MB Sadashiva the third time. But this time, he is once again in the fray despite opposition from individuals who once strongly stood in support of him. Moreover, Kalkura is also facing the allegation of taking unilateral decisions as the parishat chief and failing to furnish accounts pertaining to the Parishat activities. Still, he is confident of a victory the fourth time.
Interestingly, former parishat chief Harikrishna Punaroor who had been a staunch supporter of Kalkura all these years, has this time decided to back Anchan. Even the Parishat members aspiring for a change has increased Anchan’s chances of winning. Journalist Harish Bantwal too is in the race leading to a triangular contest.
The Parishat has 1932 members in the district of whom 70 are no more. There are a total of 876 members in Belthangady, 279 in Bantwal, 237 in Sullia and 222 in Puttur. Though the three candidates have resorted to rigorous campaigning the response has been not so encouraging.
