MANGALORE: The fishermen communtiy has strongly opposed the laying of a huge pipeline
in the sea near the NMPT facilitate the MRPL.
Fishermen leaders drew the attention of the DC towards the impending dangers to fishing
due to this nearly 17 km long pipeline which the MRPL has decided to lay without any
dredging operation. Naveen Karkera, President of the Karnataka Purse-Seine Boat Fishermen?s
Association has said the MRPL has to lay the pipeline only after undertaking dredging works.
Vasudev Bolur, fishermen leader and President of the Mogaveera Co-operative Society has
requested the DC to personally visit the place in order to have a firsthand account of the
problems faced by the fishermen.
However, MRPL officials say a similar pipeline laid in Kochi has not created any problem.
During the meet, the DC directed the MRPL officials to give a report on the technical aspects
of the pipeline laid at Kochi and also to take the local fishermen leaders to Kochi to inspect the
pipeline.
The DC has also promised another round of talks with MRPL officials and fishermen leaders
after this.
