MANGALORE : As the 17th district Kannada Sahitya Sammelan is underway, serious attempts
are on by some members of the District Kannada Sahitya Parishat to dislodge Pradeep Kumar
Kalkura who has stuck to the post of the Parishat Chief for the past 10 years, and thus make way
for an efficient leader.
Presently, rumours are doing the rounds that Kalkura who is planning to contest for the post of
district Sahitya Parishat presidentship this time too, was also eyeing the state presidentship. But,
a few new faces in the Parishat fed up with the favouritism and inefficient style of functioning of
Kalkura, have decided to put a brake to his ambition. Therefore, it is believed that victory may
be difficult for Kalkura this time.
Presently, several names are doing the rounds for the presidentship including those of MB
Sadashiva, Bhuvanabhirama Udupa, Meenakshi Gowda, Savanoor Seetaram Rai, Mohan Alva,
Mohammad Baddoor, Mohandas Suratkal, AV Navada and others.
If the Sahitya Parishat has an estimated 3000 votes, 60 per cent of them are Brahmins and it
is this majority that has helped Kalkura. However, this time, it is believed, even Harikrishna
Punaroor,a former president is not in favour of continuation of Kalkura.
It is learnt, like minded members of the Parishat are expected to meet shortly to discuss the
issue ?If he (Punaroor) makes up his mind, there can be a change in leadership,? says one of the
disgruntled members of the Parishat.
