MANGALORE: It is a known fact that several leaders including Tulu writers and scholars

have been placing a vehement demand since long to include Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the

constitution. But there is no instance of any one of these leaders using Tulu script. But here is

an interesting piece of news. Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Udupi Pejawar Mutt has been

signing in Tulu script itself in all the Mutt documents since several years.

Pejawar Seer says as per traditions of the Udupi Mutt, all the seers of the eight mutts have to sign

in Tulu script. He also says he has been signing in Tulu script since childhood and that he learnt

Tulu script from his Guru at the Mutt.

Here it is worth mentioning that the Tulu text books printed by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya

Academy recently for students who have opted for Tulu optional subject in schools, has given no

priority to Tulu script.
