MANGALORE : An under-trial lodged in the city sub-jail attempted suicide on Tuesday, reportedly frustrated by the atrocities by the jail staff and fellow under trials. Mohammad Neeraje, a fashion designer who was sick following the suicide attempt, has been admitted to Wenlock Hospital.
Mohammad was recently arrrested by the police on the charges of possessing heroin weighing nearly 2 kgs. Two others including a student of St Aloysius College too had been arrested along with him.
It is said the jail staff and some other under- trials used to inflict torture on them forcing Mohammad to consume sleeping pills.
But when Barke SI Rekha was contacted, she said ” The matter has come to our notice. According to information available the under trial had consumed some pills for stomach ache.”
However, there are allegations against two of the jail staff namely Dayananda and Praveen of demanding bribe whenever anyone wanted to meet the under-trials. It is learnt on Tuesday too, the duo demanded bribe for the release of Saroja Margaret, the warden of the Udyavar boarding hostel who was arrested on charges of resorting to conversion. It is said though she was released on bail, the jail staff had demanded bribe resulting in an altercation, According to the under- trials such incidents were common in the prison.
